Reflections on Natural Disasters

There’s nothing like a hurricane to show you what’s important in life. I’m on the West Coast but I know people in multiple states along the East Coast. My pledge brother from college moved to New York, near the water, October 1st. She’s most likely lost power already, if she didn’t have to be evacuated.
While I’m sitting in my bed, safe and warm, people have had to evacuate, buildings are collapsing, and cities are being flooded. Hospitals are without power and nurses are trying to keep their patients alive, manually bagging patients on ventilators until the power comes back on.
I knew logically that New England could get hit with a hurricane since it’s on the coast–heck, even the West Coast could run afoul of a hurricane–but it’s never been something that’s been a reality. Regardless, it shows that anything can happen in the blink of an eye. While I’ve been worried about my NaNoWriMo story people are worried about the devastation that this hurricane will cause on their lives, homes, and families.
It really puts things into perspective.
